The story behind Vocaplus

Tom van Leeuwen — creator of Vocaplus
And still proud of his Dutch accent.
The origin of Vocaplus goes back to the 1980s. At that time, computer science student Tom van Leeuwen from Utrecht decided to emigrate to Spain. One problem: he didn’t speak a word of Spanish.

“I had never taken a Spanish course, never read a Spanish newspaper… in fact I knew nothing about the Spanish language,” Tom recalls.

He decided to approach the problem differently: first build a strong foundation in vocabulary. He bought a travel dictionary and entered it word by word into his computer — an Apple ][ with a floppy drive of about 700 KB. Alongside that word list he programmed a simple application in BASIC that tested him strategically: first Spanish–Dutch, then Dutch–Spanish.

That program became the first version of Vocaplus.

After emigrating, Tom immediately tested his vocabulary in real life: reading newspapers, watching television and talking to people — full immersion. One month later he was already working at a software company in Girona and was able to have substantive conversations with clients about automation problems. Without language courses or diplomas.

“Do you think my clients cared if I sometimes made a mistake with a verb form, a preposition or an article? Of course not. They were mainly happy that I could help them solve their automation problems.

Learning a language is not about perfection, but about communication. You don’t need a beautiful smiling AI teacher with a seductive computer voice. With Vocaplus you build a personal vocabulary that allows you to get started immediately in practical situations.

And my accent? I’m proud of it. Thirty-five years later I wouldn’t want to lose it for anything.”

Later Tom worked on several successful internet projects. One of them, “Las Páginas Amarillas”, grew into a platform in seven languages with millions of visitors per month. The system ran on multiple servers with load balancing and generated more than one million dollars in advertising revenue.

When it comes to languages, Tom also worked for Amazon for many years as a translator from English and Spanish into Dutch — an experience that only reinforced the importance of a strong vocabulary.

The current version of Vocaplus builds on the same principle: vocabulary as the foundation of language acquisition.

What is new is the support of artificial intelligence (AI) — present where useful, but without dominating the learning process. AI helps recognize synonyms — one of the most difficult challenges when practicing vocabulary. AI also assists in creating learning materials and providing dynamic, personalized feedback on your answers. In addition, AI opens possibilities to add new languages and further develop the platform.
