Het woord "de zwakte" komt uit het Middelnederlandse woord 'zwac', dat verwant is aan het Oudnederlandse 'swak', wat zwak of minder krachtig betekent. Interessant is dat het woord ook verwant is aan het Engelse 'weak', beide teruggaand op dezelfde Germaanse wortel.
